What does it truly mean to lay down your life for others? This sermon opens with a striking parable from Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, in which a selfish woman is offered one last chance at redemption through a single onion she once gave to a beggar. The moment she refuses to share even that small act of grace with others, the onion breaks and she falls back into the flames. The parable cuts close to home because it mirrors something we all wrestle with: the deep pull of self-interest that keeps us from genuine generosity. Drawing from 1 John 3:16, which tells us that we know love by the fact that Christ laid down his life for us and that we ought to do the same for one another, we are invited to see generosity not as an occasional virtue but as the very shape of a life transformed by gratitude. The message is clear: we are not saved by our own giving, but by God's. And the natural, overflowing response to that gift is to pass it on. If we have ever been stopped in our tracks by a sudden awareness of how deeply blessed we are, this sermon speaks directly to that moment and asks what we do with it.
